What is Jiu Jitsu?
Jiu Jitsu is a Japanese Martial Art, based on a moving system of striking, locking and throwing techniques. With a strong emphasis on the use of an opponent's body weight and movement, Jitsu provides a highly effective means of countering physical attacks from both unarmed and armed assailants, irrespective of the defenders own strength, weight or gender.
Why Learn Jitsu?
There is no doubt that training in a martial art will give you added confidence and self-defence ability. What we aim to do in Jitsu is to practice against the attacks you are likely to face in a real situation.
From the first lesson you will learn how to deal with a variety of attacks, including grabs, strikes and weapons. The primary emphasis on all this training is safety, so you will not be asked to do anything beyond your level of competence.
There are some obvious benefits of learning a Martial Art such as Jitsu, for example for keeping fit and learning to look after yourself. Equally there are some less obvious benefits.
We are never far from violence. Jitsu provides a safe and controlled forum to explore violence, without hurting each other. When you leave the Dojo, you leave the violence behind you. Practitioners of the Martial Arts don't start fights.
Do you teach self-defence?
We teach Jitsu, but within Jitsu you will find a street-wise solution to every conceivable self-defence situation. As we teach Jitsu, we observe some of the traditional formalities. Having said this, the atmosphere of the club is laid back, and the instructors are friendly and approachable.
What sort of attacks will I be taught to handle?
You will be taught to cope with a comprehensive range of possible assaults. These include minor things like being grabbed by the wrist, being kicked and punched, through to being attacked with knives, bottles and coshes. You are even taught how to cope with multiple attackers.
I'm not very strong. Will this make it more difficult for me?
Not at all. Because Jitsu makes use of the opponent's body weight and movement, it is suitable for everyone, regardless of your own strength, weight and gender.
Does it hurt?
No. Well, a little bit. All punches, kicks and other strikes used defensively are "pulled." However the punches and kicks you learn to defend yourself from are most definitely full intensity.
Is it fun?
It's great fun. You will improve your fitness, co-ordination and confidence at the same time as learning a practical self-defence system. And you will be training with a great bunch of people.
Is Jitsu suitable for children?
All techniques are taught in such a way that it is easy for the child to understand and learn the defence system. Each technique is broken down into steps; the children learn each step and then combine them to produce the defence technique. It is good to see the child gradually master these techniques, gain an inner confidence, co-ordination, and the ability to effectively deal with any problems that they might come across from bullies or assailants.
